How to Apply For Small Trailer - Caravan Approval For Australia

THERE IS A NEW ONLINE IMPORT APPLICATION STARTING 1 MAY2013. THE OLD FORM WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED STARTING 30 JUNE 2013.

This guide will help you fill out your small trailer(caravan) import approval for Australia.  A small trailer is considered to be a trailer that weighs under 4500 KG, or in other words, has an aggregate trailer mass of 4.5 tonnes or less.

  • Carefully read the Importing Vehicles to Australia information on this website before completing this application.
  • Any missing documents or incomplete applications will delay the issuing Import Approval. You will need an Import Approval to take delivery of your vehicle from the Australian Port of entry.
  • A fee of $50.00 must accompany this application. Details of how to make payment are on the Application Form.

1)Choose the Application for a Small Road Trailer

2) IN THE AGENT SECTION (Part 2) : DO NOT PUT ME OR ANYONE ELSE IN THERE AS IF THEY WANT ADDITIONAL INFO ON THE ITEM FOR IMPORT APPROVAL THEY WILL GO TO THEM , NOT TO YOU TO ASK 

3) Part 3. You fill in the details of the trailer. Where its located, and the country of manufacture.

4) Part 4. You should include with the application photos of the Info Sticker off the trailer(Part 4) , and the photo of the trailer itself 

Here is an example of a trailer weight information sticker.  This sticker can normally be found in the interior of a trailer, most often attached to the door of a cabinet.

Sticker Example. GVWR = Aggregate Trailer Mass. UVW = Tare Mass.  CCC = Gross Trailer Mass
Australia and the US use different terms for the same thing.  Here is what you need to know.

GVWR = Aggregate Trailer Mass.
UVW = Tare Mass. 
CCC = Gross Trailer Mass


5)On the application under Part 4 where it asks in 2 Questions " Does it Comply with Australian Regulations " you have to answer NO, and another standard. Write that before Registration it will be brought up to Australian Compliance.


6)If this is your first import approval, you need to include a copy of your drivers license or passport. The copy of the passport needs to be signed by someone else that it is a true copy of the original.
