New Import Approval Application for Small Road Trailers - IO3 - Australia

This post will help you in filling out the new import application form for Australia. The form can be filled out ONLINE HERE, or you can download and fill out the paper forms(links at the end of this post).

There are 8 steps to importing a vehicle. See the chart here.

There are two parts to each import application. You have to fill out the application for importing a vehicle, and you need to fill in the appropriate addendum. For Small Road trailers (This scheme allows for the importation of road trailers that have an Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) not more than 4.5 tonnes.), the link is here.

VSB1 can be found here
1.1 - New or Used
1.2 - VSB1 can be found here.
1.3 - NO. Proceed to part 1.4

1.4 - General caravan requirements. Prior to registration  the vehicle will be brought into compliance.

1.8 - Length in metres
1.9 - Width in metres (over 2.5 metres wide can not be road registered)

GVWR = Aggregate Trailer Mass.  UVW = Tare Mass.

GVWR = Aggregate Trailer Mass.

1.12 - Aggregate Trailer Mass is the same as GVWR. If it is over 4500 kg, you can not use this form.
1.13 - NO

UVW = Tare Mass.
1.15 - Tare Mass is the same as UVW or unloaded vehicle weight. See sticker above for example.

1.16 - Gross Trailer Mass is normally 90% of the ATM or GVWR. It is a proportion of the load(A), plus the mass on the tires(B). This does not include the weight on the coupling, or tongue(C). Please see diagram below. Except for semi-trailers, the difference between ATM and GTM is usually small.
Note
Except for semi-trailers, the difference between the ATM and GTM is usually small.

1.17 - Evidence of ATM. See picture of the weight sticker above for an example. Only a brand new never registered vehicle in the US has a Certificate of Origin. The Certificate of Origin also called an MSO is turned into the local motor vehicles titling division upon first registration.
1.18 - If it is a 50mm coupling, then it is Australian Standard (AS4177.3). If it is a 2 5/16 ball coupling, then it is Other standard (SAE/CSA  Class IV). If it is a 5th wheel normally it is SAE J2638 and CSA 2240.1.2.
1.19 - Make
1.20 - Model
1.21 - Year of Manufacture
1.22 - Month of Manufacture if known
1.23 - USA

1.24 - You should have an invoice or bill of sale for the trailer. Attach it to the application.
1.25 - You should have a VIN for the trailer. Anything newer than 1980 will have a 17 digit VIN. If its older than 1980 it can have less digits
1.26 - Provide the VIN, and you are done.
If choosing to make a paper based submission, please complete the application form and addendum for every vehicle type you wish to import.
